Question 5

5. How does agriculture contribute to ecologically sustainable development?

Accepted Answer

medium: Agriculture contributes to ecologically sustainable development by ensuring **food security** and creating **job opportunities**. It helps in maintaining the **biodiversity** of the environment, which is crucial for a sustainable ecosystem. By employing **sustainable farming practices**, such as crop rotation and organic farming, agriculture can minimize its impact on the environment and promote a **healthy landscape**. Furthermore, agriculture's role in supporting the **rural economy** helps reduce **poverty** in these areas, providing a stable foundation for community development.

medium: In addition, agriculture contributes to **natural beauty** and **scenic landscapes** which are essential for **tourism**. The development of agriculture through methods like **efficient irrigation systems** and appropriate financial support ensures not only better yield but also a **sustainable ecosystem**. The use of **eco-friendly practices** can enhance soil fertility and reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers, leading to healthier crops and a healthier environment. Supporting farmers with **technical assistance** also plays a huge role in promoting innovative techniques that are environmentally friendly.

Question 6

6. What do you think are the pros and cons of ‘mechanisation of agriculture’?

Accepted Answer

medium: The **pros** of **mechanisation of agriculture** include increased **efficiency** and **productivity**. By using machines, farmers can cultivate larger areas of land in a shorter amount of time, leading to more **food production**. Additionally, it can reduce the **labor** costs since machines can perform tasks that typically require many workers. On the other hand, the **cons** include **job losses** in rural areas, as fewer workers are needed when farms become mechanised. This can lead to increased **unemployment**, especially for unskilled workers. Furthermore, the initial **investment** in machinery can be quite high, which may be a challenge for many farmers. Overall, while mechanisation increases **production**, it also raises concerns about **employment** and **financial** hurdles.

hard: The **mechanisation** of agriculture is a double-edged sword. It brings about higher levels of **efficiency** which can lead to improved **food security** in the long run. This is crucial as many countries face the challenge of feeding growing populations. However, the shift to mechanised farming can also result in the **degradation** of the social fabric in rural communities. As machinery replaces manual labor, the **community ties** that often bond farmers and laborers start to weaken. Furthermore, the reliance on technology may make farmers vulnerable to **market fluctuations** and the cost of maintenance for these machines can be substantial, leading to potential **financial stress**. Thus, finding a **balance** is essential for sustainable growth in agriculture.

Question 7

7. How can ‘modern farming methods’ cause unemployment?

Accepted Answer

medium: Modern farming methods can lead to **unemployment** by significantly reducing the need for **manual labor**. For instance, the introduction of **automation** and **advanced technologies** means that fewer workers are required to perform tasks that were once done by many. As farms adopt more **efficient** equipment and techniques, the skills needed for traditional **agricultural jobs** may become obsolete. This shift can result in a **displacement** of workers, especially in rural areas where **job opportunities** are already limited. Ultimately, while modern methods can improve productivity, they can also contribute to higher **unemployment rates** in the agricultural sector.

hard: The adoption of **modern farming techniques** may result in higher **efficiency** and yields, but it often comes at the cost of **traditional** jobs. As operations scale up and utilize **technology**, such as **drones** for monitoring crops or **robotic machinery** for harvesting, there is a decline in the demand for **labor-intensive** jobs. This could be particularly problematic for **low-skilled workers** who might lack the necessary training for new technologies, leading to increased **economic disparities** within rural communities. Therefore, while modern methods are beneficial for production, they can have a **negative impact** on employment levels.

hard: Furthermore, **government policies** that promote modern practices without adequate **support systems** for displaced workers can exacerbate **unemployment** rates. If the transition to modern farming is not accompanied by initiatives for **re-skilling** or new job creation in other sectors, communities may struggle to adapt. For instance, **financial assistance** and training programs would be essential to help workers navigate this shift. The lack of a supportive framework can lead to **economic** and social problems, making unemployment a significant concern as we move forward into the future of agriculture.
